A Legend from Anatolia: The Dragon and the Phoenix
110 cm x 165 cm / 3′7″ x 5′5″
This striking rug was woven in the Kula region of Manisa and is commonly referred to in the market as an “Antique Yörük Rug” due to its powerful central motif. Inspired by 15th-century Anatolian mythology, the design symbolises the timeless struggle and harmony between two legendary creatures: the dragon and the phoenix. The dragon represents protection, water, and the primal power of the earth, while the phoenix embodies rebirth, immortality, and divine wisdom. Their encounter is interpreted as a metaphor for balance, fertility, and the eternal cycle of nature. Merging nomadic symbolism with settled weaving traditions, this piece is a rare example that carries an ancient legend into the modern living space.
