Balikesir Karakechili Black Bordered Rug

It was woven 50-60 years ago by the Karakechili
Nomads of Balikesir province in West Anatolia. Wool on wool yarns were used in
its weaving. Typical earth colours and tones were used on the ground. Dark
colours such as black and navy blue were preferred for the borders. The symbols
on it are multi-coloured. Karakechili Nomads dye their wool using herbs such as
turmeric, euphorbia, olive leaves, pomegranate peel, walnut shell, juniper
leaves, linden, onion peel, etc. To change the colour tones, they use vinegar,
unriped grape juice, moss, clay and ash. This process is called mordanting.The
borders of this rug have the symbols of the burdock. two rows below are the
symbols of the fetter.The side borders are black in colour. There are fertility
symbols in the middle of the rug. Due to light differences during the
photographing of the products, there may be differences in colour tones between
the photograph and the actual product. Some products may have been stored in
chests for many years without being used, and some products may have been used.
Some parts of the products may have undergone minor repairs over the years,
while some parts have not been touched in order not to spoil the originality.
