Handwoven Vintage Emirdag Kilim
141 cm x 445 cm / 4′7″ x 14′7″
This unique handwoven kilim was crafted approximately 70–80 years ago in the Emirdag district of Afyonkarahisar, using wool weft over cotton warp. Located at the intersection of Central Anatolia and the Aegean Region, Emirdag reflects a weaving tradition that blends the bold geometric motifs of Central Anatolia with the soft colour transitions of the Aegean.
The wool used in this kilim was dyed with natural plant-based materials such as walnut husk, madder root, gall oak, and onion skins. Over time, these colours have mellowed into elegant pastel tones, lending the piece a mature and graceful character. The motifs—such as ram's horn, hands on hips, earring, and burdock symbolise strength, fertility, protection, and abundance. The single-bordure structure is characteristic of Emirdag kilims and emphasises the central composition with a refined design language.
As Emirdag has historically been a region of emigration, weaving played a vital role for women—both as a means of income and a way of preserving and transmitting cultural identity. These kilims were not only used for home décor but were also prepared as part of bridal trousseaux, offered as housewarming gifts, or sent to relatives abroad as heartfelt tokens of connection.
While the photographs aim to reflect the true tones of the product, slight variations may occur due to lighting. Certain sections may have been repaired over time, while others have been intentionally left untouched to preserve the authenticity of the piece.
