Oushak Esme Green Tree of Life Rug

It was woven 60-70 years ago by women on vertical looms called istar using only wool yarns in the Esme region of the Oushak Province in the West Anatolia Region. Since it was woven before 1981, it is defined as a middle period Esme Rug. The wool was dyed with plants such as red root plants, acorns, walnut shells, onion skins. Vinegar, plum juice, ash juice and mushroom juice were used to change the tones of the colours. This process is called mordanting. The city of Oushak and the Esme region are known all over the world for their mastery in weaving carpets and rugs. Esme rugs are protected with a geographical indication.

Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis, laid an Oushak carpet on the couch where he laid his patients. You can still see this carpet in the Sigmund Freud Museum in London.
